Social Network Marketing Etiquette
By: Teasas Tips Techniques

When you've got a friend, that friend will sing your praises for all to know if necessary. That is one of the values of friendship. And the more friends you have just means they value your company and you theirs.

In social network marketing groups no one blog can stand alone. If you are without friends in a group such as StumbleUpon or even Facebook, you probably aren't marketing your blog very well and the traffic you get or aren't getting is a direct relation to that.

I believe networking with only those blogs in which we share like blog-o-torial (new word I just created) behaviors. This strategy, will result in higher traffic numbers for myself as well as those bloggers who trade links with me. As a cohesive unit we will stand a better chance of benefiting from a pool of shared, like-minded readers as opposed to small crumbs or chunks here and there.

For those marketers who were deeply into list building, StumbleUpon is a variation of that, but without the spam. However, etiquette plays a big part in the level of success you achieve when maximizing the friendships you foster there. Here are some rules to follow when you are Stumbling.

1. Review a stumbler's post. It doesn't hurt to look at and read what the community is doing. This helps when you request friendship.

2. Use the Connect With Friends option. This always helps when you invite friends to stumble with you.

3. Utilize the Browse People button to discover other like minded bloggers and stumblers. It's like introducing yourself to strangers at a party.

4. Share popular, blog relevant videos you find. Click here for this stumblers' video submission. It is a video of a robot drawing a human face. Kind of weird and offbeat, the kind of information you're going to find on this blog.

Reviewing other stumblers is a show of professional courtesy. Be careful in requesting reciprocal reviews, some stumblers frown upon this (oh by the way I forgot to mention, this particular video is a recently popular one.)

5. Be patient. Building relationships with people takes time. Be willing to invest the most precious thing you have, time.

6. Dedicate a specific amount of time to cultivating those friendships. I'm learning to spend less time on multiple submissions, and more on a few key submissions per week, and then spend the rest of my time exchanging blog posts with my friends. I'm going to treat friend time like a few friends chillin' and having a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I figure the less I focus on magnitude and more on qualitude (another word I created), then the target audience will follow.

Stumble upon allows you to add friends (Similar to MySpace), Redesign your profile, create your own blogs and message your friends. When you are on the hunt for new friends to add, do a search for the people in your niche subject. For example: if you are promoting a self fitness products, then you only want friends that are into fitness. By adding lots of friends in your niche area, you can then ask them to rate your website. Within stumble upon you can also join 'Groups', go out and find group that are based around your niche and join up to all of them. The more your out there, the more Easy Traffic you will get.
So, for excellent results - Send them to a web page that offers great information about your chosen niche. Include a Video or MP3 that also talks about great value. Quote:I’ve had nasty reviews before its part and parcel of being an out-and-out optimizer or marketer on Stumble, just ask Marty. But one of them quite simply stated “Spams StumbleUpon database with his own website”. Now, hold on there ’sunshine’ I thought. I ain’t no Spammer!

So, me being me, I followed his link through to his page and lo’ there it was laid out before me. The stark, naked truth. It was an ingenious way to bring the matter to my own doorstep. The stumbler, who I had previously tagged as a troll had went through my submissions dating back to when I first started using StumbleUpon and had thumbed them down. He had even added cute remarks to help drive home the message.

I sat back and stared as the reality hit me like a “slap in the face from a wet kipper”. Page after page of my sites submissions sitting there glistening like a dark dewdrop of dishonesty. Spammer!

Once I had worked out a few things in my mind it all seemed pretty straight forward. These submissions had been during my learning curve with social media marketing. I like to call these times my Pre-Jeff days (Hi Jeff). When I had no awareness of my surroundings.

However, how does that look to those that have been part of Stumble since its awakening. How did I present myself to them (the trolls) as I thumbed-up my content. My self-promoting content. Not good I imagine.

So I cleaned up my act. I spent time un-thumbing my own submits, wiping away my own reviews and basically washed that spammy history from my account.

Now, I know there are ways to catch a persons attention and show them the error of their ways. But I take my hat off to ThungurKnifur for the shrewd way he helped me realise that sometimes as we move forward and progress in our understanding - some people have to bear the brunt of our recklessness as we take our first steps into the social media environment.

He used proof to back his claims. Not insults! Not plastic hard man talk! Not threats against a persons life! Simple proof that the persona I had of myself could be shattered just like that of a mirror.

Cheers,
Paul
Ex-Spammer.
Quote:Andy Baio has caught a "search engine optimizer" working for The Times -- a venerable British newspaper -- posting thousands of spams for times.co.uk to various social sites, including Metafilter, Mahalo, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Yahoo! Answers, Ma.gnolia, and Netscape's Propeller. The spammer works for Sitelynx, a contractor to The Times, as "SEO Manager."

Since 2004, The Times retained the established SEO consulting firm Sitelynx to handle their search engine marketing. Working on behalf of The Times, a Sitelynx employee posted thousands of links to community and social news websites, including Mahalo, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Metafilter, Yahoo! Answers, Ma.gnolia, and Netscape's Propeller. His actions were done without any disclosure of his affiliation to Sitelynx or The Times and were, in some cases, posted under the assumed identity of his wife.

The accounts were all created by Piotr "Peter" Wyspianski, an SEO Manager at Sitelynx since June 2007. (Though his LinkedIn resume says "Executive.")
Before coming to Sitelynx, Piotr had a history of promoting his own business, an online jewelry store called Signature Gems, by using his profiles on sites like Myspace, Flickr, and Yahoo 360 to manipulate his search engine rankings. After coming to Sitelynx, he continued to use this technique to promote The Times.

Ok, you have a site, all on a really cool template, but there is no one visiting it? Simple, use StumbleUpon!

All you have to do is...

Step 1) Go to your websites index page (your main page.)
Step 2) Click the "I like it!" button.
Step 3) Write a little review of what you think of your site, and put it in the correct catagory, and click ok.

There are pro's and con's on submitting to StumbleUpon.

PROS
You'll have a lot of people visiting your site. This page got 2000+ visitors within 6 hours of submitting it.

If they like it, more people will see it.

Long Term: Stumblers will keep on going to your site, weeks, even months, after you submitted it.

CON'S
People from different languages might end up at your site.

Pay-per-click won't be very effective. Stumblers can just click "Stumble!" and end up at a different page just as quicly as they got to you, so they won't want to click your ads.

If your site isn't Video, Humor, Web 2.0 or an eclectic website, it might not do as well, this is all marketing, if your site is on the history of the orange, you won't get as many views as someone who is setting their butt on fire, it's sad, but true.

There ARE ways of making sure you get repeat visits, however.
Make your site big, people will want to see what's next, but may not have enough time, so they'll come back again and again. This can be extended by adding more content.

Make your site look good, simple, you wouldn't visit a lime green background piczo, animated glittered website would you? You'd click back, unless the epilepsy gets you first.

Make your site memorable. Give it a memorable name, MySpace, Facebook, Wikipedia, you know what they are, even if it isn't in the name, because they offer a lot of content only they have, this article, you'll probably remember it for quite a while, or at least come back and refer to it.

There we go, there are a lot of ways to help your site get off its feet by using StumbleUpon!

Yes, it's old news, but still, if you didn't know it, you do now.

Quote:StumbleUpon has officially joined eBay. We’re excited about this, and we hope you are too.

Looking to the future, we think that joining eBay is the right thing to do to help us to grow StumbleUpon to its full potential. We think eBay is a great fit for us because eBay and StumbleUpon share similar approaches – we’re both driven by our community of users, and we are both dedicated to connecting people.

We also want you to know that not much will change around here. We’ll be running StumbleUpon separately within eBay Inc., and we’ll still be focused on developing features based on your feedback.

Thanks for all your support. Keep stumbling!
